How Episeras detects your seizure risk

The science behind Episeras is based on identifying the period preceding a clinical seizure, when the brain’s electrical activity is measurably different. From the sensors in your ear to the alert on your phone, here is how that happens.

From your ear to an alert

Four steps turn a faint electrical signal into a warning you can act on.

    Signal capture

    The sensors in your earpiece are highly sensitive and detect electrical variances in your brain activity (ear-EEG).

  2. Step 2

    Transmission

    These signals are sent securely via Bluetooth to your smartphone app in real time.

  3. Step 3

    Analysis

    The app processes the signals using your unique configured model, looking for the specific patterns that match the preictal state.

  4. Step 4

    Alert

    When a high-probability match is found, the system triggers the alert protocol. 15 minutes later, the app asks whether the seizure occurred — and you can add an event at any time with the date, time, duration, trigger, symptoms and notes.

The earpiece

A custom-molded wearable that sits discreetly in your ear. It contains specialized sensors that read electrical signals from your brain through the ear canal, and it is designed for comfort and extended wear.

The app

The interface on your smartphone. It receives data from the earpiece, displays your current status, lets you log events and — most importantly — delivers the alerts.

The cloud

The platform where the heavy computational work happens to train and refine the personalized parameters that are later configured into your model.

No preictal patterns are currently detected. Your physiological parameters are within your normal baseline range.

No system-detected risks requiring action. Follow your usual precautions if you feel symptoms.

What to do when you get an alert

Receiving a High Risk alert gives you a valuable window of time to prioritize your safety. At this moment, remember “E.P.I.”.

EEmergency
  • Your phone will notify you with an alert sound.

PProtection
  • Stop any potentially dangerous activity immediately (for example cooking, using tools or walking near traffic).

  • Make your surroundings safer: move away from sharp objects, heat sources or water.

  • Let someone know you have received an alert — a family member, a colleague or a caregiver.

  • Remain in your safe position until the risk passes or the seizure occurs.

IInformation
  • 15 minutes after an alert, the app will ask you to confirm whether a seizure actually occurred. Answering is essential to improving the accuracy of the predictions.

If you have a seizure following an alert, you will be prompted to open the app 15 minutes after the alert triggers.

Once you have recovered, reply to the notification to confirm the seizure occurred — tap “Confirm crisis”.

If you received an alert but did not have a seizure, tap “False alarm”.

This is recorded as a false alarm and helps the system reduce them over time.

You have a seizure, but there is no app alert

If a seizure occurs later, or you experience one without receiving an alert, please record it manually in the app.

Use the “Add event” button to log the seizure with all the relevant details.
